Gas heating and hot water is easily the most popular type of central heating system in use within the UK today.
It all comes back to costs and by that I mean running costs. In effect, what most people want is a central heating system that doesn’t cost the earth and one that is convenient to use.
Looking at the chart above, it is plain to see that electric costs are almost 4 times more than gas which is a clear indicator as to what type of heating system you should be installing.
Even cheaper than gas is a Ground Source Heat Pump system but you have to bear in mind the installation costs which are substantially more than a standard gas central heating system.
From the point of view of installation, running costs and convenience of use, a gas central heating system is easily the most popular and one of the cheapest forms of heating and hot water sources in the UK today.

Of course you should also be aware that the cost of oil has plummeted over the past few years and that is now having a significant impact on the cost of operating an oil boiler and heating system.
It may well be that the tipping point has been reached already and that an oil central heating and hot water systems may already be working out cheaper than gas depending entirely on the amount you are paying for your kerosene or oil.
You also need to take in to account your environment in that you can’t really install a heating system that is inappropriate for your environment.
For example, if you live in the city or a flat within a city then a gas system is probably the best option as you wouldn’t have the space to be installing oil tanks or setting up sheds to house your wood pellets.
However, if you live in a more rural area or in the countryside then you probably have all the space you need to set up any type of system you need.
In fact, the reality is, most homes in the countryside use oil for their boiler and then they also have the advantage of open fires and stoves to burn timber and all sorts of man made fuels.

Of course there are also properties where gas and oil is not available and these are they type of properties where it makes sense to install an electric system.
When it comes to electric heating and hot water systems there are various options to choose from and you will need to do quite a bit of research to work out which company offer up the most credible system for your property.

Once thing I should say is that you shouldn’t overlook using solar to provide you with hot water for most of the year.
Clearly, a solar hot water system won’t work on its own but investing in a solar hot water system makes sense as the average cost of installation is less than £2,000 and you will have you money back within a few years. After that, you can enjoy free hot water for another 20 years or so and who doesn’t want free hot water?
